Hi!

I suggest re-testing just to be sure, but if this is 2.5, then the old custom link syntax not working is expected. That's because of issue #12148 - in 2.5 we are adding full markdown support via the Parsedown library, which will replace our custom syntax. As such, in 2.5, once you turn on the markdown setting in Admin > Settings, you can create hyperlinks like so:

[my display text](http://my-link.example.com)

We haven't updated the documentation yet, but since people are starting to test 2.5, this is a good motivator to do so!

Note that in 2.5, a new task has also been added to convert the Redmine-style former syntax links to Markdown:

php symfony i18n:custom-link-to-markdown

See #12149 for more info.
