Description

Terms in Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) don't export in a format supported by AtoM's SKOS import functionality. All of the LCSH SKOS export formats contain urls instead of literal values for narrow terms, and the urls don't end in .rdf as AtoM requires. The exports that combine MADS and SKOS create multiple untitled and duplicate terms in AtoM. The goal of this task is to describe how to modify an LCSH export for successful import into AtoM and to provide an easy-to-use template for doing so.

The following instructions allow a user to import a set of LCSH narrow terms into an existing subject term in AtoM:

  1. Go to an LCSH term that has narrow terms; for example https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85123105.html (Skating)
  2. Go to export options at the bottom of the page and export as RDF/XML (MADS and SKOS)
  3. Open the downloaded file in a text editor
  4. Copy the skos:narrower terms and paste them into the template over the text that says REPLACE THIS
  5. Using "Find and replace", replace skos:narrower with skos:concept
  6. Save the template as a new file
  7. In AtoM, create a subject term called Skating if it doesn't already exist
  8. In the term view page for Skating click Import SKOS to the right of the term
  9. Import your saved rdf file
  10. Return to the Skating view page and refresh your browser if necessary
  11. You will see all the imported terms as narrower terms; if you click on one of the narrower terms you will see the term's LCSH url in the source note
