Our documentation to install AtoM from the Git repository suggests to install the Composer dependencies using the root user:

$ sudo composer install --no-dev
Do not run Composer as root/super user! See https://getcomposer.org/root for details
Continue as root/super user [yes]?

While the same Composer says it's not recommended: https://getcomposer.org/root
