I haven't tested it thoughtfully, but I believe we are sending our dates to ES with the UTC mark (Z) even though they are locals. That makes retrieval awkward as they stamped as UTC when they are not.

Now that dates are stored in MySQL in local time, but we're not planning to change that at this point. It's based on default_timezone in settings.yml.
